string(27) " a familiar and light way\." Five I HAD NO IDEA WHAT Dimitri was talking about, but I followed along obediently. To my surprise, he led me out of the boundaries of the campus and into the surrounding woods. The Academy owned a lot of land, not all of which was actively used for educational purposes. We will write a custom essay sample on Frostbite Chapter 5 or any similar topic only for you Order Now We were in a remote part of Montana, and at times, it seemed as though the school was just barely holding back the wilderness. We walked quietly for a while, our feet crunching through thick, unbroken snow. A few birds flitted by, singing their greetings to the rising sun, but mostly all I saw were scraggly, snow-heavy evergreen trees. I had to work to keep up with Dimitriââ¬â¢s longer stride, particularly since the snow slowed me down a little. Soon, I discerned a large, dark shape ahead. Some kind of building. ââ¬Å"What is that?â⬠I asked. Before he could answer, I realized it was a small cabin, made out of logs and everything. Closer examination showed that the logs looked worn and rotten in some places. The roof sagged a little. ââ¬Å"Old watch-post,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Guardians used to live on the edge of campus and keep watch for Strigoi.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t they anymore?â⬠ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t have enough guardians to staff it. Besides, Moroi have warded campus with enough protective magic that most donââ¬â¢t think itââ¬â¢s necessary to have actual people on guard.â⬠Provided no humans staked the wards, I thought. For a few brief moments, I entertained the hope that Dimitri was leading me off to some romantic getaway. Then I heard voices on the opposite side of the building. A familiar hum of feeling coursed into my mind. Lissa was there. Dimitri and I rounded the corner of the building, coming up on a surprising scene. A small frozen pond lay there, and Christian and Lissa were ice skating on it. A woman I didnââ¬â¢t know was with them, but her back was to me. All I could see was a wave of jet-black hair that arced around her when she skated to a graceful stop. Lissa grinned when she saw me. ââ¬Å"Rose!â⬠Christian glanced over at me as she spoke, and I got the distinct impression he felt I was intruding on their romantic moment. Lissa moved in awkward strides to the pondââ¬â¢s edge. She wasnââ¬â¢t so adept at skating. I could only stare in bewildermentand jealousy. ââ¬Å"Thanks for inviting me to the party.â⬠ââ¬Å"I figured you were busy,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"And this is secret anyway. We arenââ¬â¢t supposed to be here.â⬠I could have told them that. Christian skated up beside her, and the strange woman soon followed. ââ¬Å"You bringing party crashers, Dimka?â⬠she asked. I wondered who she was talking to, until I heard Dimitri laugh. He didnââ¬â¢t do it that often, and my surprise increased. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s impossible to keep Rose away from places she shouldnââ¬â¢t be. She always finds them eventually.â⬠The woman grinned and turned around, flipping her long hair over one shoulder, so that I suddenly saw her face full-on. It took every ounce of my already dubiously held self-control not to react. Her heart-shaped face had large eyes exactly the same shade as Christianââ¬â¢s, a pale wintry blue. The lips that smiled at me were delicate and lovely, glossed in a shade of pink that set off the rest of her features. But across her left cheek, marring what would have otherwise been smooth, white skin were raised, purplish scars. Their shape and formation looked very much like someone had bitten into and torn out part of her cheek. Which, I realized, was exactly what had happened. I swallowed. I suddenly knew who this was. It was Christianââ¬â¢s aunt. When his parents had turned Strigoi, theyââ¬â¢d come back for him, hoping to hide him away and turn him Strigoi when he was older. I didnââ¬â¢t know all the details, but I knew his aunt had fended them off. As Iââ¬â¢d observed before, though, Strigoi were deadly. Sheââ¬â¢d provided enough of a distraction until the guardians showed up, but she hadnââ¬â¢t walked away without damage. She extended her gloved hand to me. ââ¬Å"Tasha Ozera,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve heard a lot about you, Rose.â⬠I gave Christian a dangerous look, and Tasha laughed. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"It was all good.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, it wasnââ¬â¢t,â⬠he countered. She shook her head in exasperation. ââ¬Å"Honestly, I donââ¬â¢t know where he got such horrible social skills. He didnââ¬â¢t learn them from me.â⬠That was obvious, I thought. ââ¬Å"What are you guys doing out here?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"I wanted to spend some time with these two.â⬠A small frown wrinkled her forehead. ââ¬Å"But I donââ¬â¢t really like hanging around the school itself. They arenââ¬â¢t always hospitableâ⬠¦.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t get that at first. School officials usually fell all over themselves when royals came to visit. Then I figured it out. ââ¬Å"Because â⬠¦ because of what happened â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Considering the way everyone treated Christian because of his parents, I shouldnââ¬â¢t have been surprised to find his aunt facing the same discrimination. Tasha shrugged. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the way it is.â⬠She rubbed her hands together and exhaled, her breath making a frosty cloud in the air. ââ¬Å"But letââ¬â¢s not stand out here, not when we can build a fire inside.â⬠I gave a last, wistful glance at the frozen pond and then followed the others inside. The cabin was pretty bare, covered in layers of dust and dirt. It consisted of only one room. There was a narrow bed with no covers in the corner and a few shelves where food had probably once been stored. There was a fireplace, however, and we soon had a blaze going that warmed the small area. The five of us sat down, huddling around its heat, and Tasha produced a bag of marshmallows that we cooked over the flames. As we feasted on that gooey goodness, Lissa and Christian talked to each other in that easy, comfortable way they always had. To my surprise, Tasha and Dimitri also talked in a familiar and light way. You read "Frostbite Chapter 5" in category "Essay examples" They obviously knew each other from way back when. Iââ¬â¢d actually never seen him so animated before. Even when affectionate with me, thereââ¬â¢d always been a serious air about him. With Tasha, he bantered and laughed. The more I listened to her, the more I liked her. Finally, unable to stay out of the conversation, I asked, ââ¬Å"So are you coming on the ski trip?â⬠She nodded. Stifling a yawn, she stretched herself out like a cat. ââ¬Å"I havenââ¬â¢t been skiing in ages. No time. Been saving all my vacation for this.â⬠ââ¬Å"Vacation?â⬠I gave her a curious look. ââ¬Å"Do you haveâ⬠¦a job?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sadly, yes,â⬠Tasha said, though she didnââ¬â¢t actually sound very sad about it. ââ¬Å"I teach martial arts classes.â⬠I stared in astonishment. I couldnââ¬â¢t have been more surprised if sheââ¬â¢d said she was an astronaut or a telephone psychic. A lot of royals just didnââ¬â¢t work at all, and if they did, it was usually in some sort of investment or other moneymaking business that furthered their family fortunes. And those who did work certainly didnââ¬â¢t do a lot of martial arts or physically demanding jobs. Moroi had a lot of great attributes: exceptional sensessmell, sight, and hearingand the power to work magic. But physically, they were tall and slender, often small-boned. They also got weak from being in sunlight. Now, those things werenââ¬â¢t enough to prevent someone from becoming a fighter, but they did make it more challenging. An idea had built up among the Moroi over time that their best offense was a good defense, and most shied away from the thought of physical conflict. They hid in well-protected places like the Academy, always relying on stronger, hardier dhampirs to guard them. ââ¬Å"What do you think, Rose?â⬠Christian seemed highly amused by my surprise. ââ¬Å"Think you could take her?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hard to say,â⬠I said. Tasha crooked me a grin. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re being modest. Iââ¬â¢ve seen what you guys can do. This is just a hobby I picked up.â⬠Dimitri chuckled. ââ¬Å"Now youââ¬â¢re being modest. You could teach half the classes around here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not likely,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢d be pretty embarrassing to be beaten up by a bunch of teenagers.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think thatââ¬â¢d happen,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I seem to remember you doing some damage to Neil Szelsky.â⬠Tasha rolled her eyes. ââ¬Å"Throwing my drink in his face wasnââ¬â¢t actually damageunless you consider the damage it did to his suit. And we all know how he is about his clothes.â⬠They both laughed at some private joke the rest of us werenââ¬â¢t in on, but I was only half-listening. I was still intrigued about her role with the Strigoi. The self-control Iââ¬â¢d tried to maintain finally slipped. ââ¬Å"Did you start learning to fight before or after that happened to your face?â⬠ââ¬Å"Rose!â⬠hissed Lissa. But Tasha didnââ¬â¢t seem upset. Neither did Christian, and he usually grew uncomfortable when the attack with his parents was brought up. She regarded me with a level, thoughtful look. It reminded me of the one I sometimes got from Dimitri if I did something surprising that he approved of. ââ¬Å"After,â⬠she said. She didnââ¬â¢t lower her gaze or look embarrassed, though I sensed sadness in her. ââ¬Å"How much do you know?â⬠I glanced at Christian. ââ¬Å"The basics.â⬠She nodded. ââ¬Å"I knew â⬠¦ I knew what Lucas and Moira had become, but that still didnââ¬â¢t prepare me. Mentally, physically, or emotionally. I think if I had to live through it again, I still wouldnââ¬â¢t be ready. But after that night, I looked at myself figurativelyand realized how defenseless I was. Iââ¬â¢d spent my whole life expecting guardians to protect me and take care of me. ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s not to say the guardians arenââ¬â¢t capable. Like I said, you could probably take me in a fight. But theyLucas and Moiracut down our two guardians before we realized what had happened. I stalled them from taking Christian but just barely. If the others hadnââ¬â¢t shown up, Iââ¬â¢d be dead, and heââ¬â¢dâ⬠She stopped, frowned, and kept going. ââ¬Å"I decided that I didnââ¬â¢t want to die that way, not without putting up a real fight and doing everything I could to protect myself and those I love. So I learned all sorts of self-defense. And after a while, I didnââ¬â¢t really, uh, fit in so well with high society around here. So I moved to Minneapolis and made a living from teaching others.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t doubt there were other Moroi living in Minneapolisthough God only knew whybut I could read between the lines. Sheââ¬â¢d moved there and integrated herself with humans, keeping away from other vampires like Lissa and I had for two years. I started to wonder also if there might have been something else there between the lines. Sheââ¬â¢d said sheââ¬â¢d learned ââ¬Å"all sorts of self-defenseâ⬠apparently, more than just martial arts. Going along with their offense-defense beliefs, the Moroi didnââ¬â¢t think magic should be used as a weapon. Long ago, it had been used that way, and some Moroi still secretly did today. Christian, I knew, was one of them. I suddenly had a good idea of where he might have picked up that kind of thing. Silence fell. It was hard to follow up a sad story like that. But Tasha, I realized, was one of those people who could always lighten a mood. It made me like her even more, and she spent the rest of the time telling us funny stories. She didnââ¬â¢t put on airs like a lot of royals did, so she had lots of dirt on everyone. Dimitri knew a lot of the people she spoke of honestly, how did someone so antisocial seem to know everyone in Moroi and guardian societyand would occasionally add some small detail. They had us in hysterics until Tasha finally looked at her watch. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s the best place a girl can go shopping around here?â⬠she asked. Lissa and I exchanged looks. ââ¬Å"Missoula,â⬠we said in unison. Tasha sighed. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s a couple hours away, but if I leave soon, I can probably still get in some time before the stores close. Iââ¬â¢m hopelessly behind in Christmas shopping.â⬠I groaned. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d kill to go shopping.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me too,â⬠said Lissa. ââ¬Å"Maybe we could sneak alongâ⬠¦.â⬠I gave Dimitri a hopeful look. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠he said immediately. I gave a sigh of my own. Tasha yawned again. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll have to grab some coffee, so I donââ¬â¢t sleep on the drive in.â⬠ââ¬Å"Canââ¬â¢t one of your guardians drive for you?â⬠She shook her head. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t have any.â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t have any â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I frowned, parsing her words. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t have any guardians?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope.â⬠I shot up. ââ¬Å"But thatââ¬â¢s not possible! Youââ¬â¢re royal. You should have at least one. Two, really.â⬠Guardians were distributed among Moroi in a cryptic, micromanaged way by the Guardian Council. It was kind of an unfair system, considering the ratio of guardians to Moroi. Non-royals tended to get them by a lottery system. Royals always got them. High-ranking royals often got more than one, but even the lowest-ranking member of royalty wouldnââ¬â¢t have been without one. ââ¬Å"The Ozeras arenââ¬â¢t exactly first in line when guardians get assigned,â⬠said Christian bitterly. ââ¬Å"Ever sinceâ⬠¦my parents diedâ⬠¦thereââ¬â¢s kind of been a shortage.â⬠My anger flared up. ââ¬Å"But thatââ¬â¢s not fair. They canââ¬â¢t punish you for what your parents did.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not punishment, Rose.â⬠Tasha didnââ¬â¢t seem nearly as enraged as she should have been, in my opinion. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s justâ⬠¦a rearranging of priorities.â⬠ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re leaving you defenseless. You canââ¬â¢t go out there by yourself!â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not defenseless, Rose. Iââ¬â¢ve told you that. And if I really wanted a guardian, I could make a nuisance of myself, but itââ¬â¢s a lot of hassle. Iââ¬â¢m fine for now.â⬠Dimitri glanced over at her. ââ¬Å"You want me to go with you?â⬠ââ¬Å"And keep you up all night?â⬠Tasha shook her head. ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t do that to you, Dimka.â⬠ââ¬Å"He doesnââ¬â¢t mind,â⬠I said quickly, excited about this solution. Dimitri seemed amused by me speaking for him, but he didnââ¬â¢t contradict me. ââ¬Å"I really donââ¬â¢t.â⬠She hesitated. ââ¬Å"All right. But we should probably go soon.â⬠Our illicit party dispersed. The Moroi went one direction; Dimitri and I went another. He and Tasha made plans to meet up in a half hour. ââ¬Å"So what do you think of her?â⬠he asked when we were alone. ââ¬Å"I like her. Sheââ¬â¢s cool.â⬠I thought about her for a moment. ââ¬Å"And I get what you mean about the marks.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh?â⬠I nodded, watching my footing as we walked along the paths. Even when salted and shoveled, they could still collect hidden patches of ice. ââ¬Å"She didnââ¬â¢t do what she did for glory. She did it because she had to. Just likeâ⬠¦just like my mom did.â⬠I hated to admit it, but it was true. Janine Hathaway might be the worst mother ever, but she was a great guardian. ââ¬Å"The marks donââ¬â¢t matter. Molnijas or scars.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a fast learner,â⬠he said with approval. I swelled under his praise. ââ¬Å"Why does she call you Dimka?â⬠He laughed softly. Iââ¬â¢d heard a lot of his laughter tonight and decided Iââ¬â¢d like to hear more of it. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a nickname for Dimitri.â⬠ââ¬Å"That doesnââ¬â¢t make any sense. It doesnââ¬â¢t sound anything like Dimitri. You should be called, I donââ¬â¢t know, Dimi or something.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not how it works in Russian,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Russianââ¬â¢s weird,â⬠In Russian, the nickname for Vasilisa was Vasya, which made no sense to me. ââ¬Å"So is English.â⬠I gave him a sly look. ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢d teach me to swear in Russian, I might have a new appreciation for it.â⬠ââ¬Å"You swear too much already.â⬠ââ¬Å"I just want to express myself.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, Rozaâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He sighed, and I felt a thrill tickle me. ââ¬Å"Rozaâ⬠was my name in Russian. He rarely used it. ââ¬Å"You express yourself more than anyone else I know.â⬠I smiled and walked on a bit without saying anything else. My heart skipped a beat, I was so happy to be around him. There was something warm and right about us being together. Even as I floated along, my mind churned over something else that Iââ¬â¢d been thinking about. ââ¬Å"You know, thereââ¬â¢s something funny about Tashaââ¬â¢s scars.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s that?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"The scarsâ⬠¦they mess up her face,â⬠I began slowly. I was having trouble putting my thoughts into words. ââ¬Å"I mean, itââ¬â¢s obvious she used to be really pretty. But even with the scars now â⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t know. Sheââ¬â¢s pretty in a different way. Itââ¬â¢s likeâ⬠¦like theyââ¬â¢re part of her. They complete her.â⬠It sounded silly, but it was true. Dimitri didnââ¬â¢t say anything, but he gave me a sidelong glance. I returned it, and as our eyes met, I saw the briefest glimpse of the old attraction. It was fleeting and gone too soon, but Iââ¬â¢d seen it. Pride and approval replaced it, and they were almost as good. When he spoke, it was to echo his earlier thoughts. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a fast learner, Roza.â⬠How to cite Frostbite Chapter 5, Essay examples

The World Turned Upside Down Essay Research free essay sample
The World Turned Upside Down Essay, Research Paper When the Europeans established settlements in the New World, they sought to change over the Indians manner of civilisation. Their compulsion was to spread Christianity and their civilization throughout all of the settlements including the Indian small towns. Some Indian people accepted these traditions because they felt as if they had no where else to turn. When the colonists invaded the new land they brought with them many diseases which wiped out many Indian small towns and folks. The Indians besides had a difficult clip demuring the invasions on new districts, which led to many wars. This resulted in a big lessening of the Indian population, so some American indians turned to Cristianity and other European traditions. On the otherhand, many Indians insisted that European beliefs should be merely amongst themselves. They had no concern seeking to present a new faith when the Indian # 8217 ; s traditions have been practiced for old ages. We will write a custom essay sample on The World Turned Upside Down Essay Research or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The Indians during this clip were forced to accept the Europeans set uping new districts, even if they did non belong to them. As the Indian populations continued to diminish, some American indians intermarried with the Europeans and even the Africans to seek and hike the population one time once more. This of class produced assorted kids who were confused and could non make up ones mind which civilization they would accept. This mix of people changed the ways of life for the Native Americans every bit good as the Europeans throughout early America. It is obvious to me that land was the largest ground for war among the American indians and the Europeans. It was simple: the Indians did non desire to give up their land that they had claimed for so many old ages to a clump of irrogant colonists who take what of all time they want. The English felt that God had granted them the land and the Indians should be removed. However, the Native Americans besides wanted something from the new settlers, trade. The American Indians were great huntsmans who collected many pelts that were valuable trade merchandises. After clip some Indian folks grew in debt with the colonists and the lone manner they could pay their debts is by giving them land. That is where the Europeans and the Indian # 8217 ; s attitudes differ over land. The Indians were willing to sometimes negotiate about certain districts, where most of the Europeans were traveling to take the land whether the Indians were traveling to cooperate or non. Battles frequently broke out when larger Indian folk felt they could contend for their land. Sometimes they were able to get the better of the English in conflicts, but most of the clip they were out numbered. During this clip the English were really greety. The King was giving off land that did non even belong to him, and did non care that he was diminins hing the population of the American Indians in the procedure. Native American addresss, letters, and sentiments have given historiographers a really good apprehension of what life was like when the settlers were set uping new land. Many of the Indian # 8217 ; s letters were understandings to land packages ( workss ) in exchange for goods. This supports the thoughts I stated earlier about the importance of trade with the Europeans. In different Indian communities trade became a necessity and really destablized their ability to fend for themselves. The Indians turned to the English for guns and ammo to kill their cervid and American bison. Some besides turned to alcohol, trusting that it would wipe out some of their jobs. The leaders of certain folks would put fault on the white people for doing them unstable. Through addresss, letters, and sentiments historiographers are able to unknot the truth and find what, when, and why the settlers did what they did to the American Indians. For United States history in general, these beginnings of information show us the importance of the land. To set up a successful settlement, one must hold H2O, and descent dirt for farming. This is everything the English wanted and what chased the Indians off the land. The settlers were the laminitiss of industry and authorities. Written paperss show how the settlers began mining, agriculture, and mills. They were besides the first to put up an elective legislative organic structure, a system similar to the one we still utilize today. Documents that were written by the Europeans about Native Americans would explicate why the English did what they did. They likely wouldn # 8217 ; T do themselves out to be every bit aggressive as the Indians might propose. They would back up themselves as independent colonists doing their life the lone manner they knew how. I # 8217 ; m certain some paperss would province that the Indians were at mistake for their ain deceases. Addresss by the Indians would besides likely exaggerated how evil the white work forces truly were, and that they had no rights to any of the land they landed on. Restrictions on the Indian pacts would explicate that the Indians had no other alternate but to give their land to the white adult male in exchange for goods. Last records incorporating unwritten traditions of the Native Americans would connote that they were taken off and replaced with the beliefs of the Englishmen. The Native American Indians and the English colonists faced many adversities throughout this period of history. The Indians were faced with invasions of their land and the colonists were faced with saluatary disregard. These historical events that took topographic point 100s of old ages ago formed the United States today. These events can besides do one appreciate life in this state in 1999.

Biomedical engineering and IT coordination Essay
Biomedical engineering and IT coordination - Essay Example However, there was confusion on how to manage these devices. This is why Cabrai and Stankiewicz the head of NEHS clinical engineering group decided to give a new approach to the CE-IT overlap. They called for a summit that gave birth to the agreement that today acts as the model for VA hospitals across the United States. This change led to reduced support costs and brought forward a consistent level of skills and leadership in clinical engineering across all hospitals. It also led to the creation of a unified team that works efficiently with other programs in the VA. The MOU signed by IT, network directors and CE executives provided a framework for the establishment of a cooperative and productive working relationship between the two departments. Cabrai says that the review board was created because they wouldnââ¬â¢t include everything in the MOU. Stankiewicz on his part says that the MOU is reviewed annually during the summits in order to make the necessary changes so that it remains relevant. The operations within the medical centers have been made easier because of this agreement as it offers the guidelines on how to handle different

W2 Asign Determining Requirement in Data Warehousing Essay
W2 Asign Determining Requirement in Data Warehousing - Essay Example data warehouse, pick-up interesting data, format his or her own queries, drill through the data layers, and create custom reports and ad hoc queriesâ⬠(Ponniah, 2010, p. 40). As such, these power users usually seek complex information, multidimensional (MD) analysis, and statistical analysis which could be facilitated through the online, intranet, internet, as the use of emails. As learned from Ponniah (2010), the ââ¬Å"primary goal in the requirements definition phase is to compile information packages for all the subjects for the data warehouseâ⬠(p. 105). The kinds of requirements that one needs to gather at the requirements definition phase are categorized as follows: The gathering of information during this phase could be solicited through three (3) primary means or basic techniques: interviews, joint application development (JAD) sessions, and through questionnaires (Ponniah, 2010). Thus, the kind of details to be gathered would depend on the needs and demands of the users in the organizations. Through the use of the basic techniques for gathering information, as the query tools specialist, one must be able to comprehensively assess and determine the informational requirements of each user according to the category of requirements as stipulated above. Likewise, the types of questions that should be designed and communicated to the users should be structured in the most effective manner to facilitate solicitation of the appropriate response. Concurrently, it was also learned that aside from utilizing these three (3) basic techniques for data gathering and collection, one could gather useful information through the evaluation of existing documentation (Ponniah, 2010). As emphasized, ââ¬Å"review of existing documentation can be done by the project team without too much involvement from the users of the business units. Scheduling of the review of existing documentation involves only the members of the project teamâ⬠(Ponniah, 2010, pp. 115-116). Overall, as the

Cognitive Turn and Linguistic Turn :: Philosophy Symbols Papers
Cognitive and Linguistic Turn My first goal is to question a received view about the development of Analytical Philosophy. According to this received view Analytical Philosophy is born out of a Linguistic Turn establishing the study of language as the foundation of the discipline; this primacy of language is then overthrown by the return of the study of mind as philosophia prima through a second Cognitive Turn taken in the mid-sixties. My contention is that this picture is a gross oversimplification and that the Cognitive Turn should better be seen as an extension of the Linguistic one. Indeed, if the Cognitive Turn gives explicit logical priority to the study of mind over the study of language, one of its central features is to see the mind as a representational system offering no substantial difference with a linguistic one. However, no justification is offered for the fundamental assimilation of the nature of a mental representation with that of a linguistic symbol supporting this picture of the mind, although the idea that a system of mental representations is identical in structure with a system of linguistic symbols has been argued over and over. I try to demonstrate this point through a close critical examination of Fodor's paradigmatic notion of 'double reduction.' My second claim is that the widespread contemporary assimilation of a mental representation with a symbol of a linguistic kind is no more than a prejudice. Finally I indicate that this prejudice cannot survive a rigorous critical examination. 1. Introduction: linguistic symbol and mental representation A good deal of that important branch of contemporary philosophy which goes by the loose term of Analytical Philosophy lives, in my opinion, with a distorted representation of its own past, and consequently, with an inaccurate appreciation of the nature of its own achievements. As a matter of fact the belief is widely spread among analytical circles that the birth of Analytical Philosophy is the result of a Linguistic Turn taken by its founding figures G. Frege and B. Russell and then expanded into various directions by their notorious or less notorious followers. (1) To put it in a nutshell, the Linguistic Turn ââ¬â of which historians give in fact conflicting accounts ââ¬â (2) can be characterized by saying that it turned (better said, intended to) every philosophical problem ââ¬â and most of all every psychological and epistemological one ââ¬â into a problem about language, or at least into a problem dependent upon problems about language.
